Trademark contest for Greek products

The Ministry for Development and Competitiveness, based on the need "to highlight the products and services of Greek companies in a structured way and to enhance their quality", and to distinguish Greek products both in the Greek and in international markets, has launched a contest for the creation of a trademark for Greek products.

The contest has been launched in line with L.4072/2012 providing for the creation of a trademark for Greek products.

According to the relevant decision issued by deputy minister Mr. Ath. Skordas, published in "Diavgeia", the trademark will distinguish both products and services, and it will be registered as an official Greek state trademark by the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO).

Persons interested in designing the Greek trademark will submit their proposals to the Directorate for Commercial and Industrial Property of the General Secretariat for Commerce until 27 September 2013.

The top three trademarks decided upon by the Evaluation Board set up for this purpose will be put up for web-voting on the website of the General Secretariat for Commerce ( and the contract will be awarded to the creator of the trademark with the greatest number of votes cast by the public. There will also be money awards of 5,000, 3,000 and 2,000 EUR respectively for all three creators.

Under the terms and conditions of the contest, the Greek trademark will have to give rise, among other things, to the modern identity of Greece, show credibility as the official Greek state trademark, and be used in both Greek and English. It will also have to comply with the rules of the internal market, namely not to create de facto border barriers and not to incite thereto, as well as with the provisions for consumer protection, product labelling etc.
